Beautiful Flowers Photos – From a Summer Garden

83

By timorous

Ahh…summer. We can finally spend our days outdoors, and not be burdened by extra layers of clothing. We were meant to be outside, taking in the fresh air, the sunshine, and the beauty of nature wherever we can find it. If it weren’t for the occasionally excessive heat and humidity, summer would be probably be my favourite season.

Summer brings out the rainbow of colours that spring only hints at, and autumn and winter hide from sight. The real plus is that many summer flowers continually produce blooms that last throughout the season.

As with my other photo galleries which show the beauty of nature in each season, these beautiful flowers photos express what is most captivating about summer flowers in particular. Enjoy these beautiful flowers photos – from a summer garden…my many gardens, over the years.

^ Sunburst Dahlia - I’ll start off with this outstandingly showy Sunburst Dahlia. This type of dahlia is a larger plant, growing up to 2 meters high (6ft. 6”). As impressive as this is, it looks even better ‘in person’.

Asi-florum lily

^ Asi-Florum Lily - Here’s another of the many and varied Asian Lilies. This beautiful, light red ‘Barcelona’ variety is also quite fragrant as I recall.

Vinca

^ Vinca - While Vinca is a fairly common annual, when grown close together, the plethora of pink-eyed, white flowers stand out nicely against the rich green foliage.

Hollyhocks

^ Hollyhocks - Hollyhocks really signify summer to me. They come in so many colours and varieties, it was hard to choose just one, so I give you here, a nice close-up of this reddish-pink specimen.

Goldenrod

^ Goldenrod - Although goldenrod is normally considered a weed, and not too kind to allergy sufferers, its’ colourful, tiny spikes of yellow make a nice contrast in an otherwise green meadow.

^ ‘Everblooming’ climbing rose - Here’s a nice close-up of a beautifully rich red bloom of this ever-blooming climbing rose. With careful pruning and diligent watering, it will bloom throughout the summer.

Delphinium

^ Delphinium - The tall spires of colour on these delphinium really stand out, at the back of the annual garden bed. They come in a wide variety of colours too, like this rich blue shade, along with some pink delphiniums.

Yellow Daylily

^ Yellow Daylily - One of the many varieties of daylilies, they sport these lovely trumpet-like flowers on long, strong stems up to 4 feet high. This is a lower-growing type, hiding amongst the rich green foliage.

Mme. Le Coultre Clematis

^ Mme. Le Coultre Clematis - Clematis also comes in a wide variety of colours. I spotted this white Mme. Le Coultre in my neighbourhood recently and captured the intricate details of its many flowers. Unfortunately, the blooms are fairly short-lived, but will come again in mid-summer.

Pink Rose

^ Pink Rose - This pink rose I found in my back yard a few years back, bloomed only a couple of times. I don’t know why..perhaps it’s a wild rose. I also don’t know its name.

Tiny Padhye Lily

^ Tiny Padhye Lily - There seems to be many new lilies, or at least new to me. This outstanding ‘Tiny Padhye’ lily is actually the typical size for these lilies (certainly not tiny). Apparently squirrels like them too, if you look at the one on the lower right.

Yellow Dahlia

^ Yellow Dahlia - Actually, I’m not sure whether this is really a dahlia, although the flower heads on dahlias are quite varied..it probably is. This nice yellow one is just opening up.

Summer trees by the river

^ Summer trees by the river - Finally, here’s a nice way to spend a hot summer afternoon, sitting neath the shade of an overhanging willow tree, as a slow-moving river flows past.

Summer in the South

The oriole sings in the greening grove

As if he were half-way waiting,

The rosebuds peep from their hoods of green,

Timid, and hesitating.

The rain comes down in a torrent sweep

And the nights smell warm and pinety,

The garden thrives, but the tender shoots

Are yellow-green and tiny.

Then a flash of sun on a waiting hill,

Streams laugh that erst were quiet,

The sky smiles down with a dazzling blue

And the woods run mad with riot.

Paul Laurence Dunbar (1903)

Still…a summer garden doesn’t last forever

As the days gradually become shorter, and the beautiful flowers start to grow weary of the hot sun and the long days, we must be thankful for nature’s bounty. It will soon be getting cooler, ushering in the colours of autumn, followed by the cold blowing winds of November. But for now, let’s enjoy the dazzling rainbow of colours from a summer garden.

It is an absolute pleasure, my friend. :) The summer flowers are my favourites, mostly because of the wide variety of shapes and colours. I look forward to more lovely photos from you as well. Cheers.

Tim-I'm wondering if you've selected a title for your awesome book on 'flowers of the seasons'? I think you should seriously consider it.

The poem-that is spot on...this is how it is in the south-a brief thundershower, then nothing but sun (and humidity) again. Unless it is hurricane season of course.

Beautiful work. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you once again Denise. You never know...if I gather enough top notch pictures, it might happen.

Hello Movie Master. I'm so glad you enjoyed the beautiful flowers, and my summer garden. Thanks.

Hi Paradise7, thanks for dropping by and taking in the sights and scents of my summer garden.

Hey Green Lotus...I can see we're both lily fans. You're quite right, there's quite a few new varieties. I spotted a new reddish-brown daylily in a city park yesterday, though I must admit to being greedy. The picture was much too good to share with the online community...haha. Just kidding. I hold back some of my best shots...you never know when or if I might have enough to publish a book of flowers, as Denise suggested. Thanks for enjoying the photos. Cheers.

It wasn't until this summer visiting The Highline in New York City did I really appreciate and take an interest in the beauty of flowers. I snapped a few pictures of some pretty yellow and pink flowers. What is interesting now is knowing the names of different types of flowers. I love the tall flowers. Delphinium. Thanks for sharing.
